CERN co-operation school network in Finlandstarted 2002 • AIMS • Integrates CERN discoveries into the physics curricula in high schools by adopting local requirements. • Supports co-operation • between different subjects in a school • between high schools, • between high schools and both local universities and CERN. • Encourages high school students and teachers to do outreach about CERN physics supported by local physicists and CERN researchers. • Promotes physics, motivates and attracts students and general public about modern physics (TV programmes, outreach material on the server of YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company)).
Flexible High School Student (HSS) Programme • Integrated in the Modern Physics course or its advanced level, • 8 student groups with a basic or advanced level, teachers as trainers. • Planning conference for teachers of the co-operation network, • E-learning material by WU and student thesis, • 3 day intensive learning at CERN, • Publishing of student thesis and school press conferences, • 80 students with teachers, 5 groups, from 9 schools in the term 2000-1, • 138 students with 28 teachers, 8 groups, from17 schools in the term 2001-2. • 190 students with 31 teachers, 9 groups, from 23 schools in the term 2002-3.
Flexible learning at school • Modern physics studies (basic or advanced level). • Net-based e-learning and group works of students at school tutored by physics and other teachers, • Net-based e-learning and support for teachers by a learning expert. • Student Group works publishing on CERN research areas • Drafts before the visit, • Final reports publishing after the visit, • 1-3 best reports to the WU homepage, • High School Physics Research Awards, • Participation in a science competition in Finland. • Lectures about CERN from the local university • Web videoconferences where students discuss results of their own research studies with researchers at CERN.
International Learning in Geneva • Intensive 3 day face to face learning at CERN • Science discussions between researchers and students, • Students continue the group works. • Basic and advanced level, • Own special programme for each group, • Evaluation and feedback from the programme, • Publishing reports and experiences. • Experiences on living in Geneva • Guided visits in the United Nations and Red Cross, • Mission of Finland, • Visits in enterprises, on mountains etc. • Experiences in English and French.
Example, Pyhäjoki in co-operation with Raahe • Intensive physics learning in own high school in co-operation with the other school in the neighboring town • Physics teachers taught Modern Physics in the both schools in co-operation with the following teachers: native language, foreign languages, mathematics and IT. • Students studied net-based e-learning material and prepared for science discussion. • HIP organised the student programme for 16 students at CERN with physicists and physics teachers. • Students continued their group works together after learning at CERN and published them.

Results (Pyhäjoki, Raahe) • Student articles in newspapers, lectures at schools etc. • 19 literary essays about famous international physicists (both in oral and written from selected books), • 8 articles about CERN physics in 3 newspapers after interviewing researchers at CERN (group work, 2 students from both schools in a group), • 5 oral student lectures to other students (group work). The lectures were digital recorded by the teachers. • Student presentations will also be published as a CD-ROM in next autumn as a part of an IT course. • Articles in foreign languages will be published in the autumn.
Flexible Phycis Teacher Programme (started 2001) • 2 groups with 22 teachers from 19 schools in the term 2001-2 • 2 groups, 24.2 - 28.2.2003 and 2.6 - 6.6.2003 • learning and working in the network supported by teacher net of WU. • One week at CERN • group works of teaching material
Teacher in-service-training of modern physics in Finland • One week in-service-training organised by universities will continue. • 3 week flexible in-servic-training organised by universities in collaboration with HIP and the National Board of Education (NBE) will start. • Evaluation of flexible in-service-training …
