  3. Cleansing of the Temple • According to John, Jesus’ first action was the “Cleansing of the Temple” • The other Gospels put this event at the end of his ministry • It signified Jesus was inaugurating the New Covenant • One in which the spirit of the law, not the letter, was important

  4. What did Jesus do? • Performed miracles • Examples: Healed sick, raised dead, etc. • Cast out demons • Ate with sinners • Associated with women and Samaritans • Argued with Pharisees • Preached to and taught people

  5. Where was Jesus’ ministry? • In the region called Galilee • Headquarters: City of Capernaum • This fulfills Isaiah’s Prophecy in Mt 4 : 12-16 • Because Capernaum in Naphtali and very close to the border with Zebulun

  6. Healing the Sick • Jews believed sickness was bound with sin • In other words, sin caused sickness • The Messiah was believed to heal the sick and forgive them of their sins • Is 33:24 • This angered the Pharisees and they labeled Jesus a blasphemer • Why? • Only God could forgive sins, so Jesus was making himself equal to God

  7. Casting Out Demons • According to CCC 414, demons are fallen angels who refused to serve God • Pharisees claimed Jesus used demonic power to expel demons • What is Jesus’ response? • Mk 3 : 22-27

  8. Who Jesus ministered to • Sinners • Tax-collectors, prostitutes, etc. • Why? • “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” Mark 2:17 • Women • In Jewish society, men did not speak to women in public • Much like Muslim societies today • Samaritans • Jews hated Samaritans • This shows two things • 1 – Jesus’ ministry extends beyond the Jews • 2- Fulfilling promise that Kingdom of Israel will be restored
