Types Of Car Engine CoolingFans Whenever you drive your car, the engine car cooling fanswork to keep the engine cool. But what are the different types of fans usedfor? There are two types of fans used in cars: mechanically driven and electric. Mechanically driven fans are powered by the serpentine belt (a belt used to drive the accessories) that runs between the engine and transmission. Electric fans are usually powered by a motor that is either built into the car or is a separate component attached to theradiator. These fans were first developed in the late 1800s and were primarily used for cooling the passenger compartment of the car and keeping the occupants comfortable. Today these fans are still used for that purpose but they also have other functions such as removing condensation from the air and keeping the windshield clear of ice or snow during the winter months. Mechanically Driven FanSystem The mechanical system uses a mechanism called” compound gearing" in which the cooling of the fan spins around the central shaft of the engine when the crankshaft is turning. The engine drives the water pump and the pulley is mounted on the radiator housing by the serpentine belt. A spring-loaded clutch releases the fan when the engine stops so that the pump can be turned on and the vehicle can continue running. Power for the fan comes from the engine through its alternator which is also connected to the belt system. On newer vehicles, this system has been replaced with an electric fan and a radiator fan switch that automatically turns the fan on when the radiator heats up and turns it off when it is cool again.
Although this system is still used on older vehicles it is being replaced by the electric fan because it is more efficient and runs much quieter than the oldsystem. When the crankshaft starts to turn, the one-way clutch engages and allows the fan shaftto rotate along with the crankshaft. As the engine speed increases the clutch disengages and allows the fan shaft to spin freely and the air in the cooling system passes through the fins of the radiator where the heat from the coolant is dissipated into the air. This fan system is very reliable as long as it is properly maintained and does not fail due to age orneglect. An electric fan, on the other hand, does not require the use of a compound gear and eliminates the need for a spring-loaded clutch. It simply uses the power from the alternator to turn the fan on when the temperature inside the cooling system rises above the set point and turns it off when it drops below that point. Because an electric fan is much more efficient than name mechanically driven fan it will result in lower fuel consumption and it will give the vehicle a much quieteroperation. The centrifugal fan is a device that forces air into the cabin of the vehicle through a grill located behind the front grill of thevehicle.
