  2. Types of Stress • Eustress • Positive • Pleasant, satisfying • Heightened awareness, mental alertness • Increased cognitive & behavioral performance • Distress • Negative • Anxiety, fear, worry, agitation

  3. Causes of Stress (Stressors) • Change • Way events are interpreted • Time demands • Life/work requirements • Little or no control • Absence of approval

  4. Physical Reactions to Stress“Fight or Flight” • Release of hormones from adrenal glands • Cortisol • Converts energy stores into glucose • Supresses immune system • Norepinephrine • Clears blood slowly • Related to anger • Mood changes • Irritability

  5. Physical Reactions to Stress • Epinephrine (adrenaline) • Increase in: • Blood pressure • Respirations • Alertness • Sensory response • Blood flow to large muscles • Prolonged stress contributes to: • Hypertension • Heart disease • Ulcers • Infertility

  6. How to Control Stress • Identify stressors • Manage stress w/ 4 step plan • Stop: break out of stress response • Breathe: slowly to relieve tension • Reflect: cause of stress • Choose: how to deal with stress
