  2. History • Inca civilization in the Andes Mountains. • Inca capital was Cuzco in Peru; Machupichu. • Pizzaro and Spanish soldiers, attacked and murdered emperor of the Incas. • Spanish claimed gold and silver of the Inca.

  3. Incas forced to work; destroyed families and communities. • Quechua language continues to be spoken. • Push for indpendence in the 1800s led by Simon Bolivar and Jose de San Martin.

Pattern of oligarchy (government by the few), junta (military rule), and authoritarian rule (obedience). • Governments censored the press, limited free speech, and punished dissent. • Move toward socialism today: • Economic system in which ownership and control of the means of productionand distribution, of capital, land, etc., is by the community asawhole.

  5. Economy • Economy based on agriculture and extracting resources. • Large gap between the rich and poor. • Region produces variety of products due to location. • Coffee, cocoa, bananas, minerals, lumber, etc. • Chile is economic success story due to globalization.
