Scientific notation • Scientific notation is a way of writing numbers using powers of ten. • Scientific notation uses a number between 1 and 9.9999… with a power of ten. 4,081,000 = • 4.081 • x 106 Exponent is equal to the number of places we moved the decimal Move decimal behind first digit (6 places)

Summary • Scientific Notation is not a calculation, it is just another way of writing a number. • Scientific Notation is useful when dealing with very large or very small numbers. • When converting numbers into and out of scientific notation, we move the decimal according to the exponent on the 10.
