  4. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF HIGH SCHOOL?

  5. THE PURPOSE OF CANYON HIGH SCHOOL • Our mission is to develop responsible citizens who have the knowledge, skills, and experiencenecessary for either beginning post-secondary education or entering the workforce.

  6. HIGH SCHOOL IS A CONTACT SPORT FOR YOUR MIND

  7. If you don’t take advantage of your time in your high school , you will feel like this when you think about your future.

  8. OUR GOAL IS THAT YOU FEEL LIKE THIS WHEN YOU GRADUATE!

Career Pathways • Career Paths are a series of classes that help you explore a future career or major. • Taking Pathway classes can help you gain skills and experience to make smart choices about your options after graduation. • Students who complete a pathway get special recognition at graduation, awards, and honors.

  11. To begin, let’s start to explore more about YOU and possible classes that might give you options that match:

  12. When you meet with your counselor next week, we want to hear your plans for taking advantage of high school. We will share your current progress and make a schedule that can help support you.

  14. 9th grade • 9th grade: 6 classes + 6 classes = 60 credits • 10th grade: 6 classes + 6 classes = 60 credits • 11th grade: 6 classes + 6 classes = 60 credits • 12th grade: 5 classes + 5 classes = 50 credits 230 credits

  15. Credits? • You do NOT get credit for a course you fail. • You do NOT receive double credit for a course you repeat to better a grade. • For Example: • 9th grade • English 9B: D- (5 credits) • Summer School • (REPEAT) English 9B: B (5 credits) No Double Credits!!!

  16. GPA Grade Point Average (GPA) All letter grades earned by students are assigned a point value, from 0 to 4, which is then computed and converted into a Grade Point Average (GPA). Letter grades for regular classes, Honors, and Advanced Placement classes are converted to points as follows: Regular ClassesHonor and Advanced Placement Classes A = 4.00 A = 5.00 B = 3.00 B = 4.00 C = 2.00 C = 3.00 D = 1.00 F = 0.00 Weighted Credit

  17. Skill Building: The Process is simple The points are added for all classes and then divided by the number of classes taken to give you the Grade Point Average (GPA). 18 6 = 3.00 20 6 = 3. 33

  18. 10th Grade Year • You will take 6 classes • You will start at 8am • Unless you are in Band or Choir • Required Courses • English, Math, Science, History, and PE • One elective during the school day. • Foreign Language – you should be doing well in your English classes before you request this. • If you started your language, you should continue with your 2nd year. • CONSIDER A CCR CLASS AFTER SCHOOL

  20. Summer 2019 • Remediation • Summer School (Golden Valley HS) • Repeat any D’s • You must make up any failed courses. If you do not, you will not be able to graduate on time at Canyon. • Turning in summer school forms is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. • Summer school forms can be found on the Hart District website under “schools” or in the counseling office. • Turn completed forms in as soon as possible.

  21. Summer, cont. • Enrichment Summer Sessions • Art IA/IB, Health, PE, Exploring Health Science Careers, Body Systems A/B, Intro Engineering, Exploring Design, Visual & Media Arts, Exploring Hospitality Careers, Cybersecurity • Some of these are online.

  22. SUMMER, cont. • Experiences: Visit colleges • Experiences: Community Hours • Keep record • Experiences: College Programs • Experiences & Skills: Clubs • OFL/Mission View • Only to be used for courses you have failed. • Independent Study and we really don’t recommend.

  23. Additional info: • Take the PSAT - 10th and 11th grade • Sign up during summer registration • Check portal regularly for grades and assignments!!!! • Skill Builder: You need to learn how to use the curriculum guide to access information about classes.

  25. Registration Process • Last Name, First Name • Cell Phone # • Email • Summer School repeats? • Are you on track with a-g? • Write course # on line • List alternative electives in order of priority on the back of the form.

  26. If you don’t provide back-up choices, we will!
