Communications Basics • Listen Before Transmitting • Use Proper Call Signs • Know the Jargon (prowords) • Be familiar with the radio equipment and how to use it. • Know what frequency is being used (channel) • Know your check-in intervals
What do you need to communicate? Status and location of your team during your check-in • Any type of clue • Any type of emergency or injury • The “Find”
When to Communicate • When completing assigned actions identified ahead of time • Departure and return to base • Entering and leaving search areas • Any extended stops, such as meal breaks • Adhere to assigned check-in times
Why do we Communicate • To keep Mission Base informed; • Sortie progress • Emergency situations • Search Clues • Finds • Changes in Team Status
Lost Communications • Check the Radio, Battery, antenna and hand mic are connected • Move to Higher Ground • Use Duplex Mode • Request ground or air relay • If in a vehicle, move to another location • Use a cell phone if possible
Radio Operations Tips • If more than one radio on Team only use one or two at a time. • Keep the radio warm during cold winter operations • Use low power setting to save battery
