  2. Biography • Born on October 2, 1800- Southampton County (VA) plantation • Preacher • Never knew father • Childhood- special talent: prophet • Deeply religious

  3. Overview of Movement • 1821- Ran away from Sam Turner’s plantation: hid in woods (30 days) • 1825- vision of black/white conflict • 1831- led violent insurrection • In hiding for 6 weeks-then caught and hanged • Ended emancipation movement ->harsher slave laws

  4. Rise of Rebellion • 1831- solar eclipse= signal to fight • Gained supporters (50 slaves) -began revolt • Killed Travis family (white slave owners)

  5. Turner’s Rebellion • Murder spree throughout country • Gained arms and horses • 55 white died • Planned to invade Jerusalem-armed white men foiled plan • ->chaos • Turner fled into woods

  6. Death • Turner in woods- white mobs killed 100-200 slaves • 1831- Turner captured • Pled not guilty in trial- rebellion was “work of God” • Hung in 1831 – many of his followers were hung as well

  7. Effects • Demonstrated lengths slaves were willing to go for liberty • Southern states enacted harsher laws against slaves • Slave owners -> fear

  8. Legacy • Inspired abolitionist movement in North • Important icon to slaves • Seen as hero, religious fanatic • Stood up against white oppression • Confessions of Nat Turner by William Styron- Pulitzer Prize

  9. Second Point of View • Some saw him as a villain • Slaughtered men, women, and children • Southerners feared
