  3. Geography • The study of the earth’s physical and human features and the interaction between them

  4. Physical Features • Describe the nature of a place! • Volcanoes • Oceans • Mountains

  5. Human Features • What have people created in a certain area! • Airports • Monuments • Roads

  6. The Uses For Geography • Finding Energy Sources • Opening up businesses in new countries • Helping feed the poor

  7. Spatial Terms-Location • Where is it? • Relative location-in relation to something else • Absolute location-exact spot

  8. Absolute Location • Longitude- (meridians) circle the earth pole to pole, and measure distance east to west of the Prime Meridian • Latitude- (parallels) circle the earth parallel to the equator, and measure distance north and south of the equator

Location Terms • Equator- circles the earth like a belt, divides the earth into hemispheres, equator is 0 degrees latitude • Hemisphere- ½ sphere– (Northern, southern, eastern, western) • Prime Meridian- line that runs from north to south, everything to the east of the PM for 180 degrees is the eastern hemisphere while everything to the west of the PM for 180 degrees is the western hemisphere. The PM runs through Greenwich England and is located at 0 degrees longitude.
