  4. Trench Warfare • Prevailed on the Western Front from September 1914-March 1918 • The defense holds the advantage • Protection from the new forms of heavy artillery • How do you fight when you’re entrenched?

  5. Poison Gas • First used by the Germans at Ypres on 22 April 1915 • A very uncertain weapon & hard to control • Blisters, burns, choking, blinding, and sometimes death • Over 60 types of gas were used during the war, most notably chlorine gas and mustard gas • Necessitated the invention of the gas mask

  7. Aircraft • Observation • Fighting aces – little impact on the course of the war • Bombing – inaccurate until the end of the war

  8. Artillery • Killed more people than any other weapon during WWI • Long-range artillery: could shell the enemy from up to 16 km away • Artillery barrage: extensive artillery fire against enemy positions
