Standard Fish Game • This game illustrates the need for good Standard Work • It can be used as a part of general Lean introductory training or specifically when teaching Standard work • It quickly demonstrates the power of Standard Work in continuous improvement efforts and that without the foundation of Standard Work there is no place from which to start to improve • Once you have the base it is easy to start implementing concrete improvements, set the standard again then go back into the cycle of continuous improvement
Standard Fish Game Notes • As you are handing out blank sheets of paper, explain that you are the customer • The people in the room are manufacturers and are producing a drawing of a fish • The Takt time is 40 seconds • Have everyone draw a picture of a fish and then tape them up on the wall • As the customer, you are not very happy, this is not what you wanted • Point out all the variations in the pictures, and maybe the fact that some do not look like fish at all. Have some fun with this part • Next tell everyone you are going to hand out two pieces of paper with a grid on it • The first piece is so that you can give them Standard Work for making you a Standard Fish • You will use it to train them in the Standard Work before they will use the second piece to produce the product for the customer again (this time with Standard Work and Training)
Standard Fish Game Instructions 1 The fish is drawn on a subsequent slide. View this slide in presentation mode and it will step you through how to draw this fish • Draw a letter X in the centre box in the left column. The X should fill the box touching the intersections • Draw an upward arc from the top left intersection to the top right intersection • Draw a downward arc from the bottom left intersection to the bottom right intersection • Draw an arc from the top right intersection to the bottom right intersection • Draw a circle for the eye in the middle of the right grid line
Standard Fish Game Instructions 2 • Draw an upside down V for a fin in the middle of the curve in the top central box • Draw two V’s, for fins, spaced evenly apart on the lower central curve • Draw a curve from the top left point of the X to the bottom left point of the X to form the tail • Draw an arc for the mouth starting at the bottom right intersection. Must be a happy fish!! • And finally draw four circles for bubbles - two in the middle of the central right box and two in the top right box When you draw the demo make sure that you number the steps and tell everyone that this is the sequence in which they must draw their fish. This is the Standard Work for drawing a fish.

Standard Fish Game Instructions 3 • Have everyone place their standard fish near their original fish picture, now the customer is happy. Note the differences, are some of the old drawings landscape and some portrait? • Now that the standard is set, we produce good quality and consistent products • Ask ifanyone see ways to improve the new Standard Work? Focus on waste, e.g. is there any motion waste? • Can anyonere-sequence the steps so the pen or pencil never leaves the paper? • Can anyoneadd more definition to the size of the fins, tail, etc.? • Use the opportunity to drive home the benefits of good, simple Standard Work - we are not talking about 200 page operating instructions here. Standard Work must be simple and created by relevant staff so it is meaningful to them
