22 member states are participating Includes 20% of WI students in grades 3-8 Smarter Balanced asked for school volunteers in Fall 2013 A representative sample was drawn from the school volunteers Spring 2014 Field Test
Provides Smarter Balanced the opportunity to: ensure assessments are valid, reliable and fair for all students Determine which questions work well and which need to be improved Evaluate the performance of more than 20,000 assessment items and performance tasks Set preliminary achievement standards during the Summer of 2014 Provides the district and schools the opportunity to: Interact with online system Preview online tests Gauge readiness for spring 2015 Because the Field Test is a “test of a test”, schools will not receive scores Spring 2014 Field Test Purpose and Benefits

Parent Notification • Parent notification letter templates are provided by Smarter Balanced Consortium (see handout) • Letters can be customized to your school test window • Available on KUSD website under Departments/ Educational Accountability/Smarter Balanced Field Test • Also available on the Smarter Balanced website under Resources

A student must participate in the classroom activity prior to the performance task. Track absent students. The classroom activity involves preparation. Activity details must be downloaded from TIDE. Recommended that the building testing coordinator confirm the download with the teacher 1 week prior to the activity date Block 1 begins on March 18 (Tuesday) Block 1 includes the end of Quarter 3 Block 2 includes Spring break Block 2 has 9 possible testing days Attempts should be made to adjust for absent students, but not to over extend your resources. Students participate in the classroom activity together. Class discussion is facilitated by teacher. The performance task following the classroom activity is an individual student task After the classroom activity has been completed, students should not discuss the topic with one another. Performance Task – Math (Gr. 6)Taking a Field Trip • The teacher and parent helpers do not pay an entrance fee. • There are 30 students in the class. • Only 1 bus is needed. • The bus charge is for the entire busload of students (not each student). • Each student will pay the same amount. • The school will pay the first $200.00 of the trip.
Sample questions: Now we will think about the costs of the trip. How much will each student pay to go on each trip? Show your work or explain how you found your answer. Daniel thinks that it will cost less to go to the zoo because the entrance fee is only $2.50 per person. Explain why you agree or disagree with Daniel’s thinking. Performance Task – Math (Gr. 6)

Student Information • Go to Smarter Balanced Portal at http://sbac.portal.airast.org/ • Click on Field Tests • Click on TIDE online system
View Student Information Select grade or all grades Click Search
DPI performed initial upload of students into TIDE OEA verified data; deleted exited students and added new students TIDE database is current as of 2/14/14 Due to state and federal privacy laws, student names are not included in TIDE Student Information
Test administrators can view student information in TIDE Only District Coordinators can add students to TIDE If new students enroll in your school, contact Renee Blise to add them into TIDE School Coordinators can update accommodations in TIDE TIDE User Access to Student Information
Each school will receive a student database with: Student name Student ID WI ID Grade Level IEP, 504, ELL Status Exempt status A few students are exempt from field test Students that qualify for the WAA are exempt from ELA and math. They will participate in the Dynamic Learning Maps instead. New students to US (< 1 year) are exempt from ELA portion only IEP, 504 and ELL status are provided to help with setting accommodations in TIDE Student Database

TIDE: Manage Users Principals, School Coordinators, Technology Support Technicians were uploaded into TIDE Let Renee Blise know who should be included as Test Administrators (classroom teachers, SE teachers, ESL Teachers, etc.) Lance– all teachers with gr 6 students in schedule? Lincoln-any teacher with a schedule in Zangle? Email Renee by Monday, February 24 so test administrators can be loaded by end of February

Login Script • Test Administrators should follow Login Script • Directions that are read to students are indicated by the word “SAY” • Script must be followed exactly and used each time a test is administered • Schools are responsible for making copies for their test administrators. • Script can be printed from the WI Test Administration Manual, pages 45-49.
Student Login • Click on Secure Browser • Student must enter • Confirmation Code (KUSD ID) • State ID (WI-1234567890) • Session ID (from Test Administrator)
Student Login Information • Educational Accountability will provide schools an electronic database of student login information along with student names if desired • Schools may use database to create student labels for login process • If you want to sort labels by teacher name (homeroom/advisory) let Renee know and that variable can be added in the database
