Background Stomata are found on the epidermal layer of a plant, and they consist of 2 guard cells and a small opening, a stoma. The primary function of the stomata is gas exchange, allowing CO2 to enter the plant, and for water vapor and oxygen to escape.
Procedure Obtain a spinach leaf. Paint a small strip of nail polish on the upper epidermis and allow to dry. Attach a piece of tape and gently rub. Gently peel off tape and attach to a microscope slide. View and draw under high power (400X). Repeat for lower epidermis.
Analysis Questions Does the upper or lower epidermis have more stomata? Why do you think that is? What type of plant would have the most/least stomata?
