Spiral Notebook: Vocabulary Section • DO NOW: Attempt to make a sentence (or a string of sentences) using at least two of the following words: analyze, factor, function, interpret, structure Example: After carefully analyzing the results of the New York State exam, it became clear that students having great difficulty interpreting character relationships was the main factor in the decline of the scores.

  2. M.L.: Vocabulary List 1 • Analyze: (v.) – to examine; study • Factor: (n.) – something that influences the result of something else • Function: (n.) – purpose; role; use • Interpret: (v.) – to understand or explain something’s meaning • Structure: (n.) – way that parts of something relate to each other and work together

  3. M.L.: Reading Application • Strong readers use vocabulary words to describe characters and their relationships. APPLICATION: Directions: Write an iThought on this scene. Use at least one new word to reflect on Antonia’s relationship with one of the other characters in this scene.

Use at least one new word to reflect on Antonia’s relationship with one of the other characters in this scene. Just Carol continues to analyze the relationship between Antonia and her mom and dad, even though everyone is getting more upset and annoyed. Just Carol doesn’t seem to factor in that with the constant questioning she is making things worse. pages 17-18 9/12

Focus on character relationships in at least one of these iThoughts.
