How I Developed My Idea • I like themed ideas and lessons and my lesson will focus on different parts of sea life each day • As an elementary student, I did not learn too much about animal habitats, especially ocean life, and wished that I would have • I think that it is important to learn about the environments of other living things

  3. Week’s Lessons • Day 1: All about water: freshwater vs. saltwater • Day 2: All about fish: different species • Day 3: All about whales, dolphins, and sharks • Day 4: All about crabs, clams, lobsters, starfish, and octopuses • Day 5: All about underwater plant life and coral reef

  4. Crabs • Crabs are usually reddish in color • Crabs have ten legs • Crabs walk sideways • Crabs do not have backbones and have a shell to protect them • Crabs have two antennae that they use to feel • Crabs have a pair of claws to pinch with

  5. Clams • Clams come in many different colors, but are usually shades of brown • Clams have two shells that are held together by a muscle and the shells are used for protection • Clams live under the sea floor • Most clams are only a few inches long • There are over 15,000 types of clams

  6. Lobsters • Lobsters live at the very bottom of the sea because they like to hide in rocks and seaweed • Lobsters are a greenish-brown color and turn red when you cook them • Lobsters eat crabs, clams, and starfish • Lobsters do not have bones inside of them like people do, so they have a hard shell on the outside to protect them

  7. Starfish • Starfish are also called Sea Stars • Starfish are brightly colored-red, orange, yellow, and pink • Starfish have 5 arms with suction cups on the bottom side to move across the bottom of the ocean • A starfish does not have a head or a brain • A starfish is not really a type of fish

  8. Octopuses • Octopuses have 8 arms • Each arm has two rows of suction cups • Octopuses have blue blood • Octopuses have one eye on each side of their head and can see very well • Octopuses cannot hear • Octopuses can squirt black ink into the water if they are scared • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3StoWNCyMqE

  9. Art Project-Materials Needed • Drawing pad or white construction paper • Scissors • Red markers • Glue • Googly eyes

  10. Art Project-Instructions • 1. Trace your right hand and left hand on a piece of paper • 2. Color in each of your hands with a red marker • Cut out both of your hands • Glue your hands together with the thumbs at the top and the fingers facing out • Glue googly eyes on each thumb

  11. Modifications • Special Needs Students • I would trace the students hands for them and cut them out for them • Gifted Students • I would have them write a short essay about the crab that they made, including its name, age, hobbies, etc.
