Wifi upgrade • Aruba chosen for UW wifi by RFP • Replacing all existing APs, NAAs, AMP • New features include seamless roaming, redundancy, planning/coverage tools • Phase I – replace existing infrastructure (now) • Phase II – increase indoor coverage • Phase III – outdoor • Housing also deploying Aruba

  3. Backup Internet Service • Should be in place May • 2 new external routers, Cisco 7604 • Hydro One Telecom chosen by RFP

  4. Dialup Upgrade • System still well used, retirees • Unsupported system • Moving to new system, Cisco 2811

  5. Onsite Training, Spare Equipment • Recent onsite Procurve course • Recent onsite Aruba course • Onsite Procurve spares for campus wide use.

  6. End of Support Network Upgrades • Much network equipment has reached vendor end of support • Older equipment lacks modern features • Campus wide upgrade of outdated equipment in progress • Central and Faculty funds

  7. Telecommunication Rooms (TRs) • Often disorganized, undocumented • 1-to-1 patch cabling • Cost effective (now) • Simplifies moves/adds/changes • Maintainable/documentable

  8. Cable Documentation Project • Building cabling currently documented, Microsoft ACCESS, limitations • Patch cabling usually not documented • Updated systems/practices to document • Leverage other data, eg. room occupancy

  9. Network Standards • Network Cabling standards exist, CTAG • Standard network gear being used, Procurve, Aruba • Network configuration, documentation, practices, could benefit from standards. • CNAG subcommittee recommended Dec/2006: • Further development and adherence to standards • Examine increased central funding

Expanding IST VoIP deployment • Network Services staff on VoIP for 6 months • New buildings are VoIP • Considering expanding to all of IST in MC • Will identify issues in refitting existing building to VoIP. • Identify standards, practices, etc, needed, before pushing to other existing buildings. • Discuss implications with CNAG, CTAG, etc

  11. Microsoft Office Communications Server (OCS) • Microsoft moving aggressively into voice communications • Establishing OCS pilot project (March) • Augment existing services, Nortel/Microsoft partnership • OCS not (yet) a fully functioning corporate VoIP PBX.

  12. McMaster Medical School • UW contracted to provide all network services for McMaster Medical School. • SLA developed • Temporary facilities at 50 Queen up and running.
