  1. Neuron Classification SASRUSHA KUSHAL SHASHANK

  2. Goal • To analyze segmented cells • Identify cell body • Number of bifurcations • Polarity • Cell contacts/synapses

  3. Some Key Terms in this Project • Neurons • Synapses • Polarity • Bifurcations

  4. Neurons: The basic unit of the nervous system is neuron. The basic function of the neuron is to transmit information. There are approximately 28 billion neurons in the human body penetrating every tissue in every part.

  5. Structure of Neuron:

  6. Cell Synapses: A synapse is a small gap at the end of a neuron that allows information to pass from one neuron to the next. Synapses are found where nerve cells connects with other nerve cells. Polarity: Polarity in neurons is necessary for long range communication. Polarization is utilized in passing of electronic signals through neurons, which help to connect the Central and Peripheral Nervous Systems (CNS and PNS)

  7. Cell Segmentation • Goal of segmentation is to simplify and change the representation of an image into something that is more meaningful and easier to analyze. • Image segmentation is typically used to locate objects and boundaries in images. • The simplest method of image segmentation is called the thresholding method.

  8. We have done the smooth and sharpen features which are available already in ImageJ. Before After

  9. We have used one more feature that is subtract background in which we can reduce the noise to some extent.

  10. After Segmenting the image with segmentation editor Plugin…

  11. Future Works: We will develop a java plug in for finding the cell location , to find the number of projections, bifurcations and the contacts /synapses.
