  2. Drug & Alcohol Team (DAT) DAT provide services for young people who meet the criteria for Tier 3 support in relation to substance misuse. Tier 2: Motiv 8 Youth orientated services, offered by practitioners with some drug and alcohol experience and youth specialist knowledge, should be working at this level. The aim and purpose of this tier is to be concerned with reduction of risks and vulnerabilities, reintegration and maintenance of young people in mainstream services. Tier 3 Young people’s specialist drug services and other specialised services, which work with complex cases requiring multidisciplinary team-based work, should be working at this level. The aim of Tier 3 services is to deal with complex and often multiple needs of the child or young person and not just with the particular substance problems. Tier 3 services also work towards reintegrating and including the child in their family, community, school or place of work. (Health Advisory Service 2001) Drug & Alcohol Team (DAT)

  3. We provide: • An holistic and comprehensive assessment, considering every aspect of a young person’s life. This assessment will aim to highlight strengths, needs and risks. • An Intervention Plan agreed with the young person that aims to address the assessed needs and risks including: • Alcohol/substance use • Family/personal relationships • Accommodation • Education, training and employment • Mental health • Independence • Thinking and behaviours • Motivation • Physical health • Offending behaviour • Peer group and lifestyle choice Drug & Alcohol Team (DAT)

  4. Reviews of the assessment and Intervention Plan every 6 months with the young person, family members and other professionals (as agreed by the young person) • The Intervention Plan will be informed by a variety of different approaches: • Motivational interviewing • Cognitive behavioural • Brief/solution focussed • Crisis/risk management • Family therapy • Relapse Prevention/harm reduction  • If required direct access to medical review and treatment as directed by Consultant Psychiatrist within the Drug and Alcohol Team. • Multi-agency working with all partner agencies to ensure cohesive intervention and care planning • An assertive outreach approach will be used to encourage engagement and relationship building • All assessments and intervention plans will be delivered by a qualified and registered professional (Nurse/Social Worker) Drug & Alcohol Team (DAT)

  5. A full health screening will be offered to all young people • Flexible appointments outside of school/work hours • A confidential service for young people with clear thresholds of significant risk to self or others before information will be shared with other agencies/family members. • The Tier 3 Service also offers training when requested to schools, parents, youth service, care workers etc. Drug & Alcohol Team (DAT)

  6. Drug & Alcohol Team (DAT) • DAT recognises that there are important differences between the needs of adults and those of young people who misuse drugs including: • Social impact, such as consequences of missing or under-performing at school and/or involvement with a negative and anti-social peer group; • Vulnerability in relation to future prospects or to later involvement in crime or to victimisation and exploitation;  • Physical impact of substances on a developing body;  • Methods of use which tend to be more sporadic and opportunistic, often outdoors, may involve older peers and often carry additional risks; • Perceptions of risk which may see no connection between substance use and other issues, a sense of “immortality”, and a higher emphasis on the positive enjoyable aspects of substance use.
