  2. Rationalization • Defense mechanism used when individuals are unable to deal with reasons they behave in particular ways • Create self-justifying explanations to maintain self-esteem

  3. Examples • “I didn’t study for my test because my mom made me clean.” • Turned down by a date, rationalize by saying you weren’t attracted to the individual • Fail a college course, say it’s because of your professor

  4. What stage of Erikson’s should adolescents be in?

  5. Formal Operational • If Ms. Pierrot is taller than Andrew and Andrew is taller than Karrington, who is tallest? • (according to this situation, not real life  )

  6. Erikson  Identity Task which is unique to adolescence, begin thinking about the future They know; others opinions, their abilities, labels.. But WHO are they?

  7. Identity Crisis Inner conflict when adolescents worry about who they are TORN between their desire to be unique and to fit in
