International Baccalaureate • Interest & informational meeting – Feb. 8th at 7:00 pm in Lancer Hall?? Who Should Take Honors Courses? Questions to ask yourself: What kind of student am I? Do I have strong organizational skills, strong study habits, and the desire to devote extra time to my courses? Am I thinking about IB courses in the future? Honors courses generally offer students: • Greater emphasis on analysis • Analytical skill development • More reading and writing required • You do not have to take ALL Honors classes in 9th grade, even if you may want to be full IB in the future
A typical Honors student • Highly self-motivated • Strong academic skills • An independent reader • Open to challenges • Willing to participate orally • Has or is developing good time management skills • Willing to make connections between classes, self, and the world

(1st Sem.) • Fitness & Foods Making food choices that promote wellness & good health through food preparation & exercise. (2nd Sem.) • Life Planning (1 Year) Topics include character education, success, financial literacy, goal setting, self-concept/esteem, one quarter cooking in the foods lab. Final project will be to write a personal mission statement. There is a lab fee for each of these classes.

Fine Arts/HPE Kelly May ART • Art 1 – Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Clay, and more • Computer Graphics 1 – Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and Animation • Photography 1 – Learn to use single lens reflex camera, digital camera, & darkroom techniques • All courses have a 4-year sequence, with option to take IB Visual Arts after 2 years.
Fine Arts/HPE Kelly May HEALTH & PE All 9th graders will register for Health and PE 9. PE electives become available for students who successfully pass PE 9 and 10 with a grade of C or higher
Fine Arts/HPE Kelly May MUSIC • All rising 9th graders will register for the lowest level course, and audition to be placed in the appropriate level. • Beginning Band or Orchestra – for students who want to learn to play an instrument for the first time.
Fine Arts/HPE Kelly May MUSIC • Intermediate Band and Orchestra – for students who have played in middle school. • Chorus – boys will register for “Men’s Ensemble,” and girls will register for “Women’s Ensemble.” • Guitar all students should select Guitar I. Students who have previous experience must audition for the instructor.

During the 2011-2012 school year we will be attempting a unique accelerated program designed for students interested in the medical, biomedical engineering, and biological sciences.
