If you have any questions during our talk • Go to this webpage and type your question • https://padlet.com/h_moore/physics • Only we will see it, and you don’t need to give your name • We’ll try to answer your question during the talk today
https://padlet.com/h_moore/physics There are four Libraries • All of them have • study space • textbooks • computers & laptops • printers & copiers • helpful staff • Check the availability of study space: • www.sheffield.ac.uk/learning-spaces
https://padlet.com/h_moore/physics Information Commons • Always open • Most of the books you’ll need are here • Talk to staff for advice on using the library or for help with your computer account • Find out more • www.sheffield.ac.uk/learning-spaces
https://padlet.com/h_moore/physics The Diamond • Extra study space • Library helpdesk and reference books on level 4 • Open 24/7 • Find out more • www.sheffield.ac.uk/learning-spaces
https://padlet.com/h_moore/physics Western Bank Library • Quiet study environment – great for exam revision • Additional copies of books • Currently closed for refurbishment • Find out more • www.sheffield.ac.uk/learning-spaces
https://padlet.com/h_moore/physics Health Science Libraries • Located in the medical school at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital • Books and journals on medicine, clinical psychology and health • Find out more • www.sheffield.ac.uk/learning-spaces
https://padlet.com/h_moore/physics The University Of Sheffield The University Of Sheffield • The • University • Of • Sheffield Remember your Ucard
https://padlet.com/h_moore/physics Borrowing • You can borrow up to 25 items at a time • Take your books and Ucard to a member of staff or use the self service machines • Books renew automatically unless someone else needs them – check your emails • No fines but your account may be frozen if you return a requested book late
https://padlet.com/h_moore/physics Printing, scanning & copying • Print from any computer, laptop, phone or tablet • There is money on your card already • B&W: 5p per A4 sheet • Colour: 25p per A4 sheet • Add credit online (MUSE; MyPrinting Account) • You can also scan to email for free • Find out more • https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/cics/students/print-copy-scan
https://padlet.com/h_moore/physics Appropriate sources of information • Different sources of information are useful for different purposes • When researching for an assignment, you’ll need to use appropriate academic sources and go beyond what’s freely available online
https://padlet.com/h_moore/physics Appropriate sources of information • Textbooks are good for an introduction to a topic or to reinforce what you learn in lectures • At this stage in your course you’ll also be expected to go beyond what’s in the textbooks and do some wider reading
https://padlet.com/h_moore/physics Appropriate sources of information • Science journals publish the findings of new research and are useful when you need to find out about experimental methods and new developments • Most scholarly journals have a quality-control process (peer review) to ensure they publish good quality research
https://padlet.com/h_moore/physics Appropriate sources of information? • Preprints & postprints - a version of a scientific paper that the authors have shared online before/after it has been accepted for publication in a journal • Useful but be aware that it may not be the final peer-reviewed version of the paper • arXiv is a useful pre-print site for physics
https://padlet.com/h_moore/physics How to find them • The library gives you access to thousands of books, eBooks and online journal articles that you can use for your studies • You won’t find these on Google, so use the library’s search tools
https://padlet.com/h_moore/physics Use StarPlus to discover books and online reading Find StarPlus in MUSE; My Services
https://padlet.com/h_moore/physics If it’s on loan, request it Find out how www.sheffield.ac.uk/library/services/res
https://padlet.com/h_moore/physics Databases • Another way to help you discover journal articles and new science research • Databases are useful when you need to do a literature review or research project • You’ll get more results using a database than you will in StarPlus
https://padlet.com/h_moore/physics Useful databases for Physics & Astronomy • Web of Science • Scopus • Dimensions • These databases cover all physical, life and social sciences • arXiv: preprints in physics, maths and related fields • For other databases, visit the library subject guide for Physics & Astronomy and click on the Discovering page
https://padlet.com/h_moore/physics Searching the literature • For more information on how to search for information for your course, visit the Library guide for Physics & Astronomy: • https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/library/idlt/subject/physicsastronomy • https://digitalmedia.sheffield.ac.uk/playlist/dedicated/82026211/1_lvtag0sd/1_jlso8nd6
https://padlet.com/h_moore/physics Citing what you read • When writing reports and assignments, you’ll often need to include evidence from reliable, academic sources • (e.g. textbooks, review articles, research papers) • Here’s an example of a journal paper that has citations to other papers in the introduction. It uses the AiP Referencing style
https://padlet.com/h_moore/physics Why cite? • To avoid plagiarism by clearly distinguishing between your own ideas or words and those of other people • Help your tutor find any journal papers, books or other sources of information you’ve used when writing your assignment • Provide evidence of your reading
https://padlet.com/h_moore/physics • Physics & Astronomy use two referencing styles: • Use the AIP referencing style for Physics reports • Use the Harvard referencing style for Astronomy reports and essays • For longer projects you can choose the most appropriate style - if in doubt seek advice from your tutor. • Referencing guides are available at: • https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/library/idlt/ • departmentalreferencing
https://padlet.com/h_moore/physics Understanding Plagiarism • Plagiarism is including another person’s work without giving them credit • Every time you refer to a textbook, journal paper or other source of information you must cite it
https://padlet.com/h_moore/physics Paraphrasing • You must not copy text from a website, journal paper, book or other source of information • When referring to a textbook or journal paper, summarise it in your own words and cite it • The aim is to show you have understood what you’ve read. This will also stop you losing marks for plagiarism
