  3. Gravity The skier is being pulled down the hill by gravitational pull. The biggest factor really isn’t the gravity it’s the wind resistance. The steeper the hill is the more gravity is pulling you down.

  4. Friction This friction is called sliding friction. The skiers put gliding wax on their skis to reduce this friction. There is less friction when the ski is flat on the snow so the skier travels faster . In order to increase friction on turns the skier digs the side of their skis into the snow which gives them better control. The amount of friction that a skier has depends on the snow type.

  5. Energy When they go up the hill they have potential energy because they are overcoming gravity. When the skier is about to start the potential energy changes into kinetic energy. If you are starting from a rest the energy is called mechanical energy which then transforms into potential energy.

  6. Speed In order to gain speed the skiers crouch down. They also put gliding wax on their ski’s to increase their speed. When they turn they can go up to 50 mph. Skiers can reach speeds up to 75mph. To maintain speed the skier constantly shift knees, hips and upper body. As the skier loses height this means that they gain more speed.
