  1. Fish Health Progress at Lyons Ferry Hatchery Complex Steve Roberts Fish Health Specialist May 2012

  2. Lyons Ferry Complex – Fish Production • Lyons Ferry Hatchery – Snake River Fall chinook - Subyearlings – 1,422 K & yearlings 900 K Tucannon Spring Chinook – 230 K transferred to TH Steelhead – Lyons Ferry Steelhead – 260 K Wallowa Steelhead – 202 K Touchet stock Steelhead – 50 K Tucannon Steelhead – 75 K Spokane Rainbow – 98 K

  3. Lyons Ferry Complex – Fish Production • Tucannon Hatchery – Tucannon Spring Chinook – 230 K Tucannon Steelhead – 75 K Spokane Rainbow – 141 K

  4. Fish Health Problems: • Infectious Hematopoietic Necrosis – LFH and TH • Bacterial Kidney Disease – LFH and TH • Bacterial Gill Disease - LFH • Bacterial Coldwater Disease – LFH and TH “For every complex problem, there is a solution that is simple, neat and wrong.” H.L. Mencken

  5. Infectious Hematopoietic Necrosis • Lyons Ferry Hatchery • Last juvenile steelhead outbreak in 1992. • IHN control measures: 100% well water, IHN adult steelhead testing and destruction and/or segregation along with bio-security measures eggs and equipment sanitation

  6. IHN Virus Isolation – Steelhead Adults IHN Positive IHN Negative

  7. IHN continued • Tucannon Hatchery • IHN outbreak in juvenile rainbow in late spring 2011 • Previous IHN in rainbows in 1987. • IHN outbreak likely from bio-security lapse. • Facility depopulated and disinfected last summer. Re-populated last fall with no problems to date.

  8. Bacterial Kidney Disease • BKD problems in yearling Tucannon spring chinook and yearling Snake River fall chinook. Tucannon Spring Chinook • Last BKD mortality in Tucannon spring chinook at LFH and TH in 2003. • Last BKD mortality in Snake River fall chinook at LFH in 2006. • BKD control measures: prespawning erythromycin injection, broodstock ELISA testing - No culling or segregation along with single erythromycin feeding.

  9. BKD continued Snake River Fall Chinook • Last BKD mortality in Snake River fall chinook at LFH in 2006. • BKD control measures: prespawning erythromycin injection, broodstock ELISA testing – yearlings selected from BL females along with single erythromycin feeding. • Single erythromycin feeding was disontinued with on-station yearlings with BY 2010 and on-station and FCAP with BY 2011.

  10. Female Spawners – BKD-ELISA % <0.199

  11. Bacterial Gill Disease • Bacterial Gill Disease caused losses in sub-yearling Snake River fall chinook at LFH. • Last BGD outbreak in spring 2009. • BGD control measures low rearing densities (less than 0.12 lbs/ft^3/in), improvement to flow in adult /juvenile ponds.

  12. Bacterial Coldwater Disease • Annual BCWD losses with rainbow and steelhead at both LFH and TH. • BCWD losses every year in Lyons Ferry steelhead and Spokane rainbow at LFH. • BCWD occurs sporadic in other steelhead stock at LFH. • BCWD occurs most years in Spokane rainbow at TH.

  13. BCWD continued • BCWD outbreak treated with Aqualfor medicated feed. Some repeat treatments. • Additional improvements are needed i.e. vaccine.

  14. LFC - Fish Health Progress Report Card

  15. Acknowledgements • Hatchery staff at Lyons Ferry and Tucannon hatcheries. • WDFW fish health laboratory staff.
