  1. Language Demands to Grow for ELLs Under New Standards Reporting by Bend, Umatilla and InterMountain ESD

  2. The Article Reviews… • WIDA Standards • Understanding Language (the Stanford Initiative) • Common Core in Español (California) • Miami-Dade County School District • Council of Great City Schools

  3. WIDA • Academic language – everyday language distinction. • Five English language development standards. • Connects content standards of CCSS across grade levels and academic language for English proficiency levels. This will require differentiation in instruction. • Includes specific vocabulary and expressions for teachers. • WIDA is also working on new assessments for English proficiency.

  4. Understanding Language • Mapping out the language demands of CCSS. • Understanding Language website: • Papers related to common core • Practice and policy briefs • Developing Exemplars to demonstrate what planning a unit for ELLs under CCSS would look like. • Same goal for all students – multiple pathways to accomplish the goal.

  5. Common Core in Español – California • Being created by practitioners in San Diego in conjunction with San Diego State. • Access to core using the primary language • A form of differentiation

  6. Common Core Will Require… • More than grammar, vocabulary and process functions. • ELL students to understand and use more sophisticated language and use content functions with fluency. Example: how to read and understand complex fiction and nonfiction texts. • Students construct and convey arguments in writing across content areas

  7. ELD and Common Core • CCSS does not really address ELD. • ELL students still need systematic, explicit instruction in English. • They still need to learn the language that will not be taught anywhere else during the student day or in any content area. • ELPS standards guide content instruction.

  8. Final Thoughts/Questions • The article talks about the language demand growing… the language demand has always been there. • There is nothing new being expected that we weren't already trying to get content teachers to do through sheltered instruction and Constructing Meaning. • But now we will be seeing accountability for language in content.

  9. Final Thoughts/Questions • If these standards are for content classrooms, who will be held accountable for achieving them?
