  2. Physical Characteristics of Pneumonia: • Name – Streptococcus Pneumonia • Shape – Cocci • Size – 0.8-1 micron • Gram Stain – Negative

  3. What Pneumonia Effects: • Bacteria enters body by breathing in • Enters windpipe, travels throughout body. • Attacks lungs, air sacs, effecting breathing.

  4. Pneumonia Symptoms/Antibiotic Treatment: • Coughing, fever, fatigue, nausea, vomiting; • Rapid breathing, chills, and chest pain • Oral macrolide antibiotics (azithromycin,claromysin,erythromysin)

  5. Mumps Virus:(paramyxovirus) Physical Characteristics: • Contains RNA • Spherical • Protein coat has large protein molecules • Its’receptors are large protein “spikes” Transmission: • Spread by droplets of saliva/mucus • Mouth nose throat • Usually by coughing, sneezing, and talking

  6. Mumps Virus – Symptoms: • Swollen, salivary glands on sides of face • Fever • Headache • Weakness and fatigue • Loss of appetite • Pain while chewing or swallowing

  7. Mumps: Prevention: Treatment: Supportive care- relief from symptoms No real treatment (virus-nonliving) • Mumps Vaccine • Avoiding people infected with mumps • Wash hands frequently
