The History Behind the Name • The origin of the company’s name comes from the winged goddess of victory according to Greek mythology—Nike. • The notorious “swoosh” symbol represents the spirit of the winged goddess of victory. • The swoosh was first used in 1971 and the first shoe to show off this new design was the soccer shoe named after its company name, “Nike.” SylmarieNunez-Luna Cis 1055 Section 7

Brief History • Nike has grown to be the world's largest marketer of athletic footwear and apparel. • The concept behind the famous shoe company was to create a good running shoe for the average American. • Track athlete, Philip Knight and his coach, Bill Bowerman, founded the company in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports. Brief History • In 1978, the company’s former name, Nike, was finally born. • Originally, the company functioned as a distributor for Onitsuka Tiger, a Japanese shoemaker, making most of its sales at track meets out of Philip Knight’s car. • By 1980, the company obtained a market share of 50% in the U.S athletic shoe market.
