  2. Characteristics of Fungi • They can vary in size; microscopic to several centimeters in diameter • Reproduce asexually and sexually by means of spores

  3. Hyphae • They consist of thread-like filaments called hyphae which grow then branch out forming a tangled mass called a mycelium. • The cytoplasm in the hyphae are not divided by cell walls in some fungi.

  4. Important Facts • Plants do not make chitin therefore fungi was removed from the Plantae Kingdom. • Chitin is a material that is on the outer shells of insects and other arthropods which fungi builds their cell walls of. • Chitin is a polysaccharide with effective absorbing properties.

  5. Important Facts • The fungi Kingdom is composed of heterotrophs; many obtain energy and nutrients from dead, organic matter. • Mushrooms are multi cellular. • Yeasts are unicellular. • They lack flagella.
