Made in 1967 • Directed by Mike Nichols • Most recently Closer and Charlie Wilson’s War • Written by Buck Henry and Calder Willingham • Buck Henry also Town & Country, Calder Willingham also Little Big Man • Dustin Hoffman starred as Ben Braddock • Most recently in Last Chance Harvey and upcoming Little Fockers • Anne Bancroft starred as Mrs. Robinson • Passed away in 2005, last film was Heartbreakers • Katharine Ross as Elaine Robinson • Also in Donnie Darko • Budget was $3 mil., made over $104 mil. In USA alone
Robert Redford and Candice Bergen screen tested for the lead roles. • Lee Stanley also considered for Benjamin • Dustin Hoffman was set to star in The Producers (Mel Brooks) when the audition for this came up. • Charles Grodin was cast as Benjamin but fired after a disagreement over salary, • Anne Bancroft didn’t know Hoffman was going to grope her in the first hotel room scene. The head pounding was done so that he would stop laughing. • Bancroft and Hoffman were only just under six years apart in age.
There is a lot of imagery surrounding birth and motherhood. • Berkley scenes shot at UCLA and USC. • Richard Dreyfuss had a small on line (“Shall I get the cops? I’ll get the cops.) • Leg in the poster photo didn’t belong to Bancroft, it was Linda Gray who later starred in the stage production in London. • Nichol’s did approach Ava Gardner as well. • #17 greatest movie on AFI’s list • “Mrs. Robinson, you’re trying to seduce me. Aren’t you?” - #63 greatest line in AFI’s list.
One interesting camera technique is where Benjamin runs straight at the camera from a distance and it looks like he’s getting nowhere. • Accomplished by using a very long telephoto lens, which foreshadows distance in relation to the camera. • Another technique is where Benjamin is walking from the right to the left while the rest of the people in the scene are walking left to right. • Those that move right to left seem to be going the wrong way, it is symbolic of Ben’s journey. • None of the older characters have their first names mentioned. • Name plate on the hotel desk “Mr. Kranze” refers to the assistant director.
Ronald Reagan tested for role of Mr. Braddock. • Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel wrote and performed the theme track “Mrs. Robinson” • In Hoffman’s screen test he fumbled lines and was very awkward. • Many attribute the success of Plastics companies due to the line by Walter Brooke’s about “Plastics” • When Hoffman showed up at the producer’s office he was mistaken for a window cleaner. • This is Mike Farrell’s (Bellhop) movie debut and Marion Lorne’s (Miss DeWitte) final film. • Henry was the fourth screenwriter for the film.
