  2. Government Governors—appointed by the British gov’t. Ga’s 1st: Reynolds 2nd: Ellis 3rd: Wright who was the most effective and popular GA as a Royal Colony • Why? 1. Trustees gave up control to the British Gov’t. in 1752. GA would become like other British colonies in North America, a royal colony. • Headright System: • Land giveaway program to attract new settlers to Ga • Guidelines: • 100 free acres to head of household plus 50 acres for each additional family member, servant, or slave. 2. Legislature: consisted of two houses—upper house and lower house Upper house: appointed position; advised governor Lower house: elected position, but you had to own at least 500 acres to run. Called Commons House of Assembly. Could pass law, but governor could veto.

  3. Gov. Reynolds, 1754 - 1757: Very unpopular; poor relationship w/ colonists & Native Americans Ga’s Royal Governors (“REW”) Gov. Ellis, 1757 - 1760: had forts built, tried to end slavery but failed; communicated well w/ Native Americans; poor health & heat forced him out Gov. Wright, 1760 – 1776: very popular governor; helped Ga colony to progress & grow (He was the “wRight” man for job)
