  1. James 4:13-14

  2. Matthew 26:26-29 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is My body." [27] Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. [28] For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. [29] But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father's kingdom."

  3. The Brevity Of Life

  4. How often have we said, “Life is just too short.” • Jacob looked back at his 130 years as “few.” • James compares it to a “vapor” or “mist” (Jas. 4:14 • Maybeweshouldask,“Lifeistooshortforwhat?”

  5. Genesis 47:9 And Jacob said to Pharaoh, "The days of the years of my pilgrimage are one hundred and thirty years; few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage."

  6. Ecclesiastes 12:1 Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, Before the difficult days come, And the years draw near when you say, "I have no pleasure in them":

  7. Life is very brief and there is no way back. • You live this life only one time so either you use it properly, or you use it improperly. • But once it is gone, you cannot take it back. • For this reason it is important to know how we live every moment of our life. • The reality that life is so brief is describe in many bible passages. • The reason for that is to help us to understand that we must take advantage of every opportunity that we have.

  8. James 4:14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.

  9. James 1:10 but the rich in his humiliation, because as a flower of the field he will pass away.

  10. Job 7:6-7 “My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle,And are spent without hope.Oh, remember that my life is a breath! My eye will never again see good.

  11. Job 8:9 For we were born yesterday, and know nothing,Because our days on earth are a shadow.

  12. Job 9:25-26 “Now my days are swifter than a runner; They flee away, they see no good. They pass by like swift ships,Like an eagle swooping on its prey.

  13. Job 14:1,2 “Man who is born of womanIs of few days and full of trouble. He comes forth like a flower and fades away;He flees like a shadow and does not continue.

  14. Psalm 39:5-6 Indeed, You have made my days as handbreadths,And my age is as nothing before You;Certainly every man at his best state is but vapor.Selah Surely every man walks about like a shadow;Surely they busy themselves in vain;He heaps up riches,And does not know who will gather them.

  15. Psalm 89:47 Remember how short my time is; For what futility have You created all the children of men?

  16. Psalm 90:5-7 [5] You carry them away like a flood; They are like a sleep. In the morning they are like grass which grows up: [6] In the morning it flourishes and grows up; In the evening it is cut down and withers. [7] For we have been consumed by Your anger, And by Your wrath we are terrified.

  17. Psalm 102:3 For my days are consumed like smoke, And my bones are burned like a hearth.

  18. Psalm 144:4 Man is like a breath; His days are like a passing shadow.

  19. Life Is Too Short And you can live it in two ways: Serving God. Serving Satan.

  20. “Life Is Too Short For Wasting” • It is important to properly use time • (Eph. 5:16; Col. 4:5; John 9:4) John 9:4 NKJV[4] I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work. Ephesians 5:16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Colossians 4:5 Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time.

  21. “Life Is Too Short For Wasting” • Good stewardship pertains to more than possessions – it involves time. • May recover lost or wasted possessions, not so with time.

  22. “Life Is Too Short For Wasting”

  23. “Life Is Too Short For Wasting” • Lifeandtimearetooprecioustowasteon: • Ungodly living (1 Pet. 4:1-5) 1 Peter 4:1-5 [1] Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, [2] that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God. [3] For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles-when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries. [4] In regard to these, they think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you. [5] They will give an account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.

  24. “Life Is Too Short For Wasting” • Lifeandtimearetooprecioustowasteon: • Idleness / freeloading (2 Thess. 3:6-14) 2 Thessalonians 3:6-14 [6] But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which he received from us. [7] For you yourselves know how you ought to follow us, for we were not disorderly among you; [8] nor did we eat anyone's bread free of charge, but worked with labor and toil night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, [9] not because we do not have authority, but to make ourselves an example of how you should follow us. [10] For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. [11] For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are busybodies. [12] Now those who are such we command and exhort through our Lord Jesus Christ that they work in quietness and eat their own bread. [13] But as for you, brethren, do not grow weary in doing good. [14] And if anyone does not obey our word in this epistle, note that person and do not keep company with him, that he may be ashamed.

  25. “Life Is Too Short For Wasting” • Lifeandtimearetooprecioustowasteon: • Brooding in anger, malice and strife (Eph. 4:31-32) Ephesians 4:31-32 [31] Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. [32] And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

  26. “Life Is Too Short For Wasting” • Lifeandtimearetooprecioustowasteon: • Efforts to “get even” (1 Pet. 3:9) 1 Peter 3:9 [9] not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.

  27. “Life Is Too Short For Aimlesness” • Christians have been redeemed from “aimless conduct” (1 Pet. 1:18) 1 Peter 1:18 knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers,

  28. “Life Is Too Short For Aimlesness” • Manyhavenothigherpurposethan“letus eatanddrinkfortomorrowwedie”(1Cor.15:32) 1 Corinthians 15:32 If, in the manner of men, I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantage is it to me? If the dead do not rise, "Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!"

  29. “Life Is Too Short For Aimlesness” • Live only for the moment. • Have no worthwhile goals for this life and certainly not for life to come.

  30. “Life Is Too Short For Mediocrity” Ecclesiastes 9:9-10 [9] Live joyfully with the wife whom you love all the days of your vain life which He has given you under the sun, all your days of vanity; for that is your portion in life, and in the labor which you perform under the sun. [10] Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.

  31. “Life Is Too Short For Mediocrity” • Life is too short to settle for mediocre service. • “Any job worth doing is worth doing right” • Can one really settle for being a mediocre Christian?

  32. “Life Is Too Short For Mediocrity” Our love for God must be wholehearted (Matt. 22:37) Matthew 22:37 Jesus said to him, "'You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.'

  33. “Life Is Too Short For Mediocrity” Our service to God must be with diligence (Rom. 12:11) Romans 12:11 not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord;

  34. “Life Is Too Short For Mediocrity” Our attitude cannot be “what is enough to get me by?” (2 Pet. 1:8; 1 Cor. 15:58) 2 Peter 1:8 For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

  35. “Life Is Too Short For Short-Sightedness” Life is too short to have no goal beyond this life (Luke 12:20) Luke 12:20 But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?'

  36. “Life Is Too Short For Short-Sightedness” A failure to grow spiritually is to be short sighted (2 Pet. 1:9) Life is too short to think only “here and now” and “me and mine.” 2 Peter 1:9 For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins.

  37. “Life Is Too Short For Procrastination” Tomorrow is too uncertain for procrastination (Jas. 4:13-14). James 4:13-14 [13] Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit"; [14] whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.

  38. “Life Is Too Short For Procrastination” Need to understand what is put off may not get done. Only put off things of little consequences if not done. Some things are too important to put off and risk their not being done.

  39. “Life Is Too Short For Procrastination” Obedience to the gospel (cf. Acts 8:36-38; 16:33 Acts 8:36-38 [36] Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, "See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?" [37] Then Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may." And he answered and said, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God." [38] So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him.

  40. “Life Is Too Short For Procrastination” Reconciliation to a brother (Matt. 5:23, 24) Matthew 5:23-24 [23] Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, [24] leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

  41. Yes, life is too short waste it on useless and destructive matters. It is too short to put off really important matters toward God and other people.
