  1. Project proposal BEHAVIORAL CORRECTION ROBOT FOR TIC-DISORDER • SONGHUI RYU, YEONJU OH • COMPUTER & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, PURDUE UNIVERSITY • CNIT 581 – Introduction to Assistive Technology and Robotics • FALL 2016

  2. TOPIC • What is tic disorder • Tics are abrupt, uncontrollable movements or sounds • that deviate from a person’s normal gestures.

  3. TOPIC • Tic disorder and Tourette syndrome • Accompanied by • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) up to 50% • Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) 30-50% • Mood disorder

  4. TOPIC • Why? and how to cure Causes are not yet figured out. It could be liked to - inheritance: Genetic mutation - neurotransmitters: Dopamine, serotonin - functional abnormalities in the brain: frontal lobe - hormone: boys are more prone to tics - birth problem - environment (but not solely)

  5. TOPIC • Why? and how to cure Transient tics often goes away without treatment - Family members and teachers shouldn’t call attention / scold them - Stress makes tics worse and more frequent! In other case, Behavioral therapy - To train to manage their tic symptoms and reduce the frequency - Massed practice, relaxation technique, awareness training, self-monitoring, etc. - Effective for transient tic disorder Mental therapy - To control emotions and think positively, confidently - Shouldn’t be primary method Medication - For chronic tic disorder or TS, to control neurotransmitters - Effective for 70-80% of patients

MOTIVATION • It can be problematic • Patients can have problems with social activities • Tics can physically hurt patients & Tics may be during sleep • But, • Overall, treatments can help tics. • - Vocal tics can go away, motor tics can get better • - Tics most severe between 7-15 years old of age • - 30-40% of TS patients are cured completely or gets to moderate level • What if somebody helps them control themselves?

OBJECTIVE • Developing robot that helps behavioral therapy for tic-disorder • Patients with tic-disorder can have difficulties with behavioral therapy • - They may not recognize if they are doing tics currently • Robot can be an assistant that remind them stopping / controlling tics • - catches motor tics by motion recognition with camera • - catches vocal tics by voice recognition with microphone • It shouldn’t bother patients but just be a friend! Approaches & plans • Approaches • Except medical treatment, Habit reversal training (HRT)is the most effective way to reduce tic and tic-impairments. • If a program detect motion repetition, a robot will give a notification to users as a sound output. • Robot suggests habit reversal training action when users have tic disorder symptoms Motion / Voice Recognition Improvement of Symptoms Kinect + MicRaspberry pi Give alerts HRT User
