History of West Side Story • 1949 Jerome Robbins consulted Leonard Bernstein and Arthur Laurents about creating a musical • Based on Romeo and Juliet • The orginal plot featured a fued between an Italian-American RomanCatholic family and a Jewish family, with the conflict centering aroundanti-Semitism. • Laurents created a draft called East Side Story,but they were generally dissatisfied with it and the project was shelved for a few years. • When the trio reunited, this time with lyricist StephenSondheim, they replaced the conflict with one between the juvenile delinquent gangs of American and Puerto Rican descent.
Original West Side Story Opened at the Winter Garden Theatre on September 26,1957. Ran 732 performances before going on tour. Original cast in 1957 featured :Maria--Carol Lawrence Tony--Larry Kert Anita--Chita Rivera Bernardo--Ken Le Roy
