  1. Heat exchanger

  2. What's heat exchanger & parts of it. • Classification & types of heat exchanger . • Shell & tubes heat exchanger .

  3. the Classification We can classify heat exchangers in a according : • Connecting technique . • Number of fluids . • Degree of surface compactness. • Construction. • Flow arrangements . • Heat transfer mechanism.

  4. the Classification

  5. Flow arrangements: • Counter flow . • Parallel flow. • Cross flow .

  6. The types • Regenerative heat exchanger :is a type of heat exchanger where heat from the hot fluid is intermittently stored in a thermal storage medium before it is transferred to the cold fluid

  7. The types • Plates heat exchanger: is a type of heat exchanger that uses metal plates to transfer heat between two fluids. • this type generally consists of Plates, gaskets, frames & instrument flanges as shown in the next fig.

  8. Plate heat exchanger

  9. Shell &Tube heat exchangers • It is the most common type of heat exchanger in oil refineries and other large chemical processes . • It is suited for higher pressure applications .

  10. Components of shell & tube

  11. the tubes • The selection of tubes characteristics is very important and these characteristics: -Tube shape -Number of tube • The number of tubes depends on the rate of fluid flow and flow velocity. -Tube length • The length of the tubes has a direct effect on the rate of heat transfer and efficiency of cleaning .

  12. the tubes • -Tube diameter • The diameter of the tubes has a significant impact on: 1- Rate of heat transfer 2- Efficiency of exchanger 3- capability of cleaning tubes • -Tube thickness • The tube selection depends on avoid corrosion in tubes , resistance required and the cost .

  13. Shell The metal of shell is made of Ordinary iron or alloy resistance to corrosion or iron covered with corrosion resistant materials Baffles A baffles are placed within the shell of the heat exchanger firstly to support the tubes preventing tube vibration and sagging and secondly to direct the flow to have a higher heat transfer coefficient .the distance between two baffles is baffle spacing
