He became president for two terms after independence. He wasn't just a politician, however. He also made some key literary contributions. • Indira Gandhi made history after being elected as India's first (and, to this date, only) ever female Prime Minister in 1966. She was known as the 'Iron Lady of India,' due to her strong will and formidable reputation all around the world. The daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, she came from a very strong family in Indian politics and was first elected as Congress President in 1959. At the time, her father was the Prime Minister. Overall, she had a strong stance when it came to the centralization of power, unwilling to back down, while making India a strong regional power in South Asia, with a strong military force.
