  2. rilke11.edublogs.org TundraGeography & Climate • The Tundra biome is located in the Arctic Circle surrounding the North Pole. • The soil is frozen year-round besides in the summer when it is soggy. • Rarely ever gets more than 10 inches of rain a year. • Temperature is typically -50 degrees Fahrenheit (-45.5 Celsius) during the 6-9 month winters. During the short summers (6-10 weeks) the temperature is rarely over 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 Ceclsius).

TundraAdaptations Needed for Survival • Plants are adapted to the Tundra by staying short and close together for resistance to wind and to stay protected. • Plants are adapted to low temperatures and low light intensities because those are factors of the biome. • Animals have thick furs and feathers to survive the harsh weather. • Polar bears have white fur so they can use the snow as camouflage. cotf.edu hqoboi.com

  6. What is Biodiversity? Biodiversity is the variety of species. Species is a group of living organisms that can breed together and produce fertile offspring. It can be studies simply by counting all the different species in an ecosystem, such as reindeer, polar bears, lichens, and mosses. Scientists have estimated that there could be 3 to 100 million species on Earth, and only 1.7 have been identified! The biome with the most biodiversity is the tropical rain forest biome. The higher the biodiversity of an ecosystem, the more likely it is to recover after a disturbance. If one species goes extinct, there will be others like it to maintain their job. Extinction is natural for all species and not uncommon, but species are dwindling more than ever nowadays. Some reason are natural and some are man-caused. The International Union for Conservation of Nature says, globally, one third of species are vulnerable to extinction.

  7. How does biodiversity contribute to the sustainability of an ecosystem? • Biodiversity is very important to an ecosystem. It assures we have a variety of foods and materials. All the niches of each organism work together for the better of an ecosystem. If a biome has high biodiversity, more factors can be accomplished in the biome. A biome can also recover from a disturbance quicker if it has a highbiodiversity.
