The emergency was a difficult time for Ireland in 1947 unemployment was high and rationing was still in place.
In the 1948 General Election FiannaFáil, who had been in government for 15 years was defeated by a Coalition government, Fine Gael, The Labour party and ClannnaPoblachta.
This Government led by Fine Gael and John A Costello was the First Inter-Party Government.
They established the Industrial Development Authority (IDA) to boost Irish industry and encourage foreign investment.
Dr Noel Browne Minister for Health, led a campaign to eradicate (get rid of) TB. This was successful and saved many lives.
On Easter Monday 1949 John A Costello officially declared Eire, the 26 county Irish state, a Republic.
The mother and child scheme was Dr Noel Browne’s plan to give free medical care to all expectant mothers before and after they gave birth.
The plan was opposed by the Catholic Church as a result, the Government collapsed and FiannaFáil returned to power in the 1951 General Election.
