The risks of driver fatigue go up dramatically between 10:00 PM and dawn when people drive when they’re tired, drowsy, or sleepy. a major cause of car accidents What is it? cause drivers to have slower reaction times in extreme cases, a driver may actually fall into a microsleep, briefly losing consciousness on the road, and this can be extremely dangerous.
Symtoms of driving fatigue • These include feeling sleepy, groggy or exhausted, yawning, boredom, restlessness, and difficulty concentrating. • The driver's eyes may feel strained, sore or tired. Warning signs of driver fatigue include: • Daydreaming • Driving over the center line • Excessive yawning • Feeling impatient • Heavy eyes • Slow reactions • Stiffness.
How to prevent it • Sleep and rest is really the only cure for driving fatigue • Also, stay hydrated and avoid alcohol and any medication that causes drowsiness • When driving try and get as much fresh air as possible and take a break at least every 2 hours.
The statistics • In America, the National Sleep Foundation estimates that around 20% of crashes may involve fatigued drivers. 37% of drivers in a 2003 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration admitted that they had fallen asleep while driving. The risk of traffic accidents goes up at night due to a variety of factors, but fatigue is a major issue. • Last year in Mayo driver fatigue caused one in five fatal crashes on our roads.
