Introduction • In the 12th meeting of APT Wireless Group (AWG), it was decided to contribute a presentation from AWG to the ITU-R WP 5D workshop. • Based on this decision, this presentation is prepared to briefly introduce: • Overview of APT Wireless Group • Overview of mobile communications in the Asia-Pacific region • Studies on future IMT technologies being considered in AWG • Other examples of research projects/programs in the Asia-Pacific region • AWG workshop on IMT
Overview of APT Wireless Group • The APT Wireless Group (AWG) is covering various aspects of emerging wireless systems including IMT to meet the upcoming digital convergence era in the Asia-Pacific region. • ToR of AWG: • Share and discuss information of emerging radio technologies, stimulate research and development, and promote related telecommunication business within the Asia-Pacific region • Pursue effective solutions in the Asia-Pacific region to meet the rapid movements towards digital convergence • Provide regular channels to discuss and study spectrum sharing methodologies, spectrum harmonization and to provide advice that countries' can use in frequency band planning • Develop technical and radio regulatory solutions based on emerging and conventional wireless technologies including satellite technologies to meet APT member's needs

AWG is Now Growing • Activities including IMT studies are growing and the number of participants is increasing. • Recent achievements relevant to IMT • Information on mobile operators’ frequencies, technologies, and license duration (APT/AWF/REP-15) • APT 700MHz band plan (also included in Rec. ITU-R M.1036) • Survey and forecast of mobile communications (also included in Rep. ITU-R M.2243(IMT.UPDATE) • Following the decision of a new “APT Documents Framework” approved at the 35th Session of the APT Management Committee, AWG updated its approval procedure of technical documents. • AWG can send a “Liaison Statement” to external organizations • This would facilitate AWG to provide necessary communication and share updated information with external organizations.
Market of Mobile Communications Services • No. 1 market in the world in terms of the number of subscriptions • Mobile cellular subscriptions: 2.9 billon in 2011 • Active mobile broadband subscriptions: 420 million in 2011 • Subscriptions per 100 inhabitants (i.e., penetration rate), however, are still low compared to other developed regions • The situation of access to mobile communication services is very different depending on the countries in the Asia-Pacific region • 2G service (GSM/CDMA) is still popular, however, mobile broadband demand is increasing Source: ITU World Telecommunication /ICT Indicators database
APT Survey Report on this Subject • A new APT Report was developed regarding: • “Survey of trend and forecast on mobile communications in APT countries” (APT/AWG/REP-28) • This report contains the information and views from some APT administrations as their responses to the Questionnaire. • This Report concludes that: • A continuous growth on the number of mobile subscriptions has been observed in the last several years. • A continuous growth on the mobile data traffic has been observed in the last several years and this trend is expected to continue because of the increased penetration of various kinds of mobile devices and Internet-based mobile applications, evolution of mobile network, and so on. • It is also expected that further evolution and innovation of mobile communications will provide more enhanced existing services (e.g., voice, streaming, social networking) and inspire various kinds of new services (e.g., for improved life quality, security and safety, education, etc.).
TG-IMT in AWG(1) • Task Group-IMT (TG-IMT) in Working Group Technology Aspects (WG-TECH) focuses on the work of the following items: • To review activities on the future development of IMT-2000 and IMT-Advanced discussed in the ITU-R Working Party 5D; • To study service and technology related aspects of the future development of IMT-2000 and IMT-Advanced as well as the requirements and needs of the developing countries. • Regarding the second item above, some new topics were proposed to be studied as future IMT technologies, such as: • Active Antenna Systems • Converged RAN base stations • Heterogeneous Network
TG-IMT in AWG(2) • Before initiating these new technical studies, however, TG-IMT agreed that it is essential to collect views from APT members regarding future IMT technologies. • Countries in the region have divergent and different situations in terms of IMT system deployment • Identification of IMT technologies’ issues in the region is essential for consideration of a future IMT system in AWG • For this purpose, the Questionnaire on “Development of future IMT technologies” was developed in the 12th meeting of AWG.
Questionnaire on “Development of future IMT technologies” • The Questionnaire includes the following aspects: • Mobile broadband development • Service and applications • Development and operations • Mobile terminal • Evolution strategy • Future plan • The 13th meeting of AWG (September, 2012) • Review the responses to this Questionnaire. • The 14th meeting of AWG (Spring in 2013) • Target to summarize the regional views on future IMT technologies and develop a new APT Report

Overview of research projects/programs in the Asia-Pacific region • The table below shows some examples of research projects/programs in the Asia-Pacific region relevant to IMT technology evolution.
Workshop on IMT in AWG-13 Objective • Exchange information among APT members with an overview of and understanding on the situations, activities, views, etc. related to IMT and facilitate IMT-related work including WRC-15 Agenda Item 1.1 Scope of workshop • Presentations by administrations and industries in the region • Each presentation may include the followings (but not limited to them) • Current market situation of mobile communications supported by IMT, • On-going activities and/or future plans related to IMT, • Views on future-looking activities for IMT (e.g.,WRC-15 agenda item 1.1, spectrum harmonization in the Asia-Pacific region), • Expectations and/or suggestions in AWG activities related to IMT, etc. • The workshop does not exceed half a day in duration and is preferably held in the first day of the 13th meeting of AWG (AWG-13) • The moderator of the workshop is Dr.Kohei Satoh, Vice chair of AWG
Final Remarks • AWG will continue to contribute studies on IMT to ITU-R WP 5D. • AWG also welcome any expectations or suggestions from WP 5D for further closer collaboration in any matters of mutual interest.

#1 LTE-Hi Project: LTE-based Hotspot and Indoor solution with High Frequency, High-Bandwidth, High Performance (MIIT in China) • In China the band 3.4-3.6GHz for IMT is currently being studied as small cell application with limited transmission power. • Verification trial is planned to be held in 2012, will be followed up by the spectrum allocation. #2 Progress of TD-LTE Trial in China Circumstances • Cities:Guangzhou, Hangzhou , Nanjing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Xiamen • Add up to 83 Million of population • Peak Throughput (TD-LTE results with 20MHz of Band 38) Participants • 90%-99% of theoretical value, w/ CAT3 dongles • 55-60Mbps (DL:UL = 2:2, 6 vendors) • 76-81Mbps (DL:UL = 3:1, 5 vendors) 110Mbps was achieved using CAT4 terminal in TD-LTE system with 3:1 configuration. • User Plane and Control Plane Latency • End to end user plane latency <=30ms;Control plane latency is around 100ms, comparable with LTE FDD • Meet NGMN requirement and 3GPP design target • Concurrent Users in one cell • More than 200 users can be connected to the same cell and simultaneously enjoy DL/UL services (In WCDMA HSPA, typical value is <=64) • Everyone gets more than 100kbps downlink throughput and 50kbpsuplink throughput
