  2. Tuesday, March 6, 2012 • Daily goal: • Understand how Yellow Journalism influenced America’s decision to go to War w/ Spain. • Notes Analysis- • Use your Ch 4.1 Notes to explain how Anglo-Saxonism and the desire for New Markets influenced American imperialism.

  3. Rebellion in Cuba • Cuba was one of Spain’s oldest and most profitable colonies. It was a big Sugar producer. • The Spanish were harsh rulers in Cuba and rebel groups form to fight for independence.

  4. Yellow Journalism • William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzerran competing newspapers. • Both practiced Yellow Journalism – writing stories that are exaggerated or made up to support the Cuban rebellion. • Portrayed the Spanish as evil rulers.

  5. Remember the Maine! • Read an American Story on page 301. • Americans had invested heavily in Cuba. • The USS Maine was sent to Cuba to protect American lives and property. • The Maine then mysteriously exploded off the Cuban coast. • Who was blamed for the USS Maine disaster?

  6. The Call for War! • Americans called for war using the slogan “REMEMBER THE MAINE! (to hell w/ Spain)” • Jingoism pushed the President to declare war with Spanish.

  7. Rough Riders

  8. War! • The Spanish were poorly equipped and easily defeated. • Americans fought the Spanish in the Pacific and the Caribbean. • Theodore Roosevelt was the hero of the war for leading his cavalry group the Rough Riders.

  9. One of America’s Best

  10. Treaty of Paris • The United States also took Guam and Puerto Rico and payedSpain $20 Million for the Philippines. • Americans kept the Philippines (despite promising them independence). • Cuba became a protectorate of the US.
