  1. Laser Scanning For the Construction Industry 101

  2. The construction industry is one of the most prolific users of scanning technology. Scanners are used to collect valuable data about construction sites, including taking very precise measurements to guide construction projects. Drones provide a faster way to complete the scans that are needed, which is why drones are one of the leading platforms for construction site scanning. In this article, we discuss the basics of laser scanning in the construction industry.

  3. How Scanning Works Laser scanners use a laser to send a pulse of light out to a target and watch for the reflection. By timing how long it takes that reflection to reach the scanner after the pulse was sent, the scanner can tell how far away the target is. It does this millions of times throughout a scanning process in small increments so that it can measure the world around it. All of the individual laser scans are compiled into a point cloud. With the right software, the scan results can be turned into usable images by filling in the connections between the individual measured points. The result is a 3D image of the space that was scanned. Using software, the scan results can be manipulated and turned into diagrams or maps. It all depends on what the user needs from the scan.

  4. The Equipment Laser scanning requires three pieces of equipment: the scanner, something to mount it on, and the software to download and use the data. There are many scanners available on the market with their own perks and drawbacks. Depending on which one you pick, you may be able to avoid specific issues. The Leica BLK360 imaging laser scanner is an example of a high-grade scanner that can avoid problems. For example, it is a very light scanner that only weighs 1 kg and is small enough to hold with one hand. Despite its small size, it is highly accurate and fast at completing scans. It is exactly the type of scanner that you want for most jobs.

  5. Ways to Mount and Position a Scanner The scanner needs to be positioned correctly for scans to be accurate and complete. The most common way to mount a scanner is by placing it on a tripod in the middle of the target area. The Leica BLK360 imaging laser scanner can scan in 360 degrees so it can be placed in the middle of an area and still capture the entire target zone. Some jobs require a higher vantage point and are inaccessible by people. Fortunately, you can use a drone to carry the scanner. Laser scanners like the Leica LK360 can be mounted on a drone that can fly to a specific spot and hold that position while the Leica finishes scanning. This is more common for checking construction sites before work begins, but can be done at any time.

  6. The Software To use the data from the scans, you’ll need a computer with the right software. There are plenty of software choices available that can receive, interpret, and display the results of scans. Cyclone Register is a popular option and is the standard option for the Leica BLK360. However, you can use other software options that are compatible. There are options that even let you download an app to access the data in the field.
