  1. Civic Action Project Preventing Gun Violence in Illinois By: Alex Wiener & Zack Gentle

  2. Illinois’ Current Gun laws • It is unlawful for any person under the age of 18, to possess a handgun, or a concealable firearm. • Gun must be placed in a securely locked box or container whenever transported.

  3. Our position on this issue • We feel that the gun laws in the state of Illinois need to be enforced. • The thought that you can be eighteen and own a gun license and also any form of a gun is outrageous. • The Chicago Police along with the Governor of Illinois need to think of a better plan/idea to control gun crime.

  4. Proposed Changes in Illinois’ Gun Laws • Current laws need to be enforced and given harsher punishments. • Change age to own any gun from 18 to 21 • Require background checks on all gun purchases.

  5. Why does this issue need to be addressed? • The rate of firearm deaths among kids under age 15 is almost 12 times higher in the United States than in 25 other industrialized countries combined. • The gun/crime rate in the US is the 24th highest in the world, out of 63. • The gun/crime rate is increasing rapidly every year in the United States. • Every day, more than 80 Americans die from gun violence.

  6. How are we affected by gun crime? Three years ago we lost a close friend, Darius Mitchell, that was innocently shot and killed by gun violence on the Southside of Chicago. We live only 30 minutes away from the bad areas of Chicago. There's gun violence in Chicago everyday, so we as a community have to worry about it.

  7. Why as a community we have to worry about this problem? • There's gun violence in Chicago everyday, so people in the community have to worry about gun crime every time we step outside our door. • Every week the Chicago land area averages two gun murders • 48% of gun-owning households with children in Chicago do NOT regularly make sure that guns are equipped with child safety locks or other trigger locks.

  9. Why Contact Them? • The senators of Illinois can introduce the bill into congress. • Hopefully with a plan to get passed.
