  1. Action Enquiry Project

  2. My research challenge: • What is the effect of explicitly teaching the higher order reading skills of synthesizing and summarising when learning through various texts? • Can the students in my class transfer these skills to other genres and subjects? • How can I identify and assess the progress that is made to show proficiency in these skills?

  3. My Setting • Year 4 class • 6 ESL students with no ESL support at school • 2 hearing impaired students • 3 children with severe learning issues • My students are used to working within a variety of structures – whole class, small groups and 1:1 teaching • I have an interactive whiteboard in my class

  4. Underlying premise for choice of research • As noted, I have a variety of needs within my classroom setting.I have a firm belief as a teacher in sharing common learning opportunities so individual children are not disadvantaged by limitations that are imposed by not being able to relate to the knowledge . • This could be as a result of cultural reasons, limited experience of the topic, learning or ESL language issues. • I also believe that the more you connect and immerse children in the language connected to their learning the more confident they become in comprehending and utilising this language. • Additionally, by connecting their world outside the classroom door to the world within the classroom, the more engaged and motivated they are in sharing, deliberating and re examining their role as learners. • Consequently they are more likely to strive to improve if they are feeling empowered by prior knowledge, confident and connected to their learning environment.
