  1. UNIT 2: MUSIC… A FUNCTION SI ALT FOIX

  2. ENVIRONMENTAL MUSIC Environmental music was born in the middle of the XXth century from the Muzak Corporation, and it was thought basically to increase the indexes of productivity in factories and companies: that's why, music programmes were concived depending on these goals and some determined parameters. - It was music to be listened, not heard; a music that didn't provoque tensions or required a determined active hearing - Sung parts were avoided, for the text not being a distraction. - The volume was always moderate - It was no genre at all - High or low frequences were avoided, and even the high or low pitches - There were regular pauses during the programmes __________________________________________________________________________ Different cultures and historic periods, different communities and religions have different concepts of what is music as an art and its utility or use. But, there is one clear thing: music wasn't used for so many things as nowadays. The means or tools to reproduce music makes it easier and there's a strong demand on it.

  3. Musical Taste Personal taste is the one that makes us choose the music we like and we do it with the sensation that all what we listen was chosen by us, but it is not always like this. The means of communication impose us some music that discographies propose the for economic benefits; music shops show on their shelves the most famous and special records in these means; sometimes, we only listen to what our friends listen to. What it is from each one is the taste to have an aopen mind because this good dispositon makes us discover and appreciate different types of music. To have more freedom, we need: - to investigate different 'musics', listening to others apart from the ones we have selected. - to avoid prejudices and not classifying music as good or bad depending on our actual taste: tastes change and allow a lot of modifications.

  4. USES AND FUNCTIONS A) Artistic: We listen to it without any defined intention. In this case, music has an artistic function and a strict musical value. B) Functional: It is all that music composed by order or chosen especifically for a concrete function to the one it has to adapt. Act. 1 Artistic music or not

  5. a) Artistic music Art is accumulative; it doesn't lose value, but it raises it because it is a pleasure for senses and a picture of all the thinking and all the culture. It is not better art the nowadays one than what they did in the past. ALL IS MUSIC, ALL IS ART !

  6. b) Functional music At past times, mostly all music had a practical application, it was circumstancial music. It was demanded to composers for a special occasion... • Music for church: masses, great festivities... • Monarchy: victories, dinners, peace treatments, birthdays... __________________________________________________________ They took profit from the capacity of music to impreass people in order to araise the effect of some acts and festivities. Music acted as another decorative element as flowers, dressings or illumination. Circumstancial music is nowadays music of concert, artistic music.

  7. Functional works These 'musics' are asked to composers whi have a big creation and they know it will work. Sometimes, creation is limited for the demand a publicist, a productor or a film does. MUSIC FOR CINEMA: It is difficult to establish a barrier between functional or artistic music because on the one hand it has a concrete function: linking scenes, raising the level of expressivity of a scene...; but on the other hand, it is listened as a soundtrack, it is played at concerts, independently from the film there were composed for. Act. 3, 4, 5

  8. Functional music in sport Functional music is also related with sport and the improvement of health. SPORTS WITH MUSIC Some sports have a direct association with music as for example artistic skating, synchronised music or some modalities of gymnastics. These types of sportists have to prepare themselves for the right synchro of figures and, at the same time, for the harmony of movements with the music played: follow the pulsation, rhythm... The selection of the music has to adapt to: • The style of the sportist • His/her physical strength • The abilities to represent it artistically

  9. Sport efforts and results Introduction of music in sports centres, especially in gyms, brought to the appearance of new disciplines which lighten up the effort, organize movements and try to distract and reduce the tiring sensation. The element which makes we work more listening to music is the movement of the piece. Fast pulsations make the body react with fast movements because people, unconsciously, synchronize the movement to the pulsation. Act. 8, 9
