  1. Mission • Produce innovative engineering and design solutions and intellectual capacity that enable us to protect and nurture Earth and its’ inhabitants to meet the needs of current and future generations.

  2. Goals To catalyze interdisciplinary and inter-institutional research that provides solutions to local and global sustainability challenges. To inform and advance policies in support of governments, industry and other organizations, to advance development, particularly as relating to engineered and designed systems. To educate current and future generations of engineers, urban planners and architectsto be leaders in sustainability in their professions. To create and participate in forums for sustainability by engaging the university community, decision-makers and the public in critical thinking and action.

  3. A key partner One of our key partners is the Institut de l'énergie Trottier (IET) at Polytechnique Montréal IET’s mission is to train a new generation of engineers, scientists and innovators who have a systemic understanding of the issues surrounding the future of energy and of the technologies available to tackle the challenges society will face in the coming decades.

  4. Sustainability Research – a few examples Visit http://www.mcgill.ca/tised/our-members for more ENERGY | François Bouffard | Electrical and Computer EngineeringOperations planning methods for the electricity networks with renewable energy generation. SUSTAINABLE MANUFACTURING | Fiona Zhao | Mechanical Engineering Integrating design, manufacturing processes and sustainability assessments; Product sustainability during the design stage; Recycle of composite materials. SUSTAINABLE URBAN TRANSPORTATION | Ahmed El-Geneidy | School of Urban Planning Urban design and urban planning in Canada; traffic and transit evaluations; transport policy.

  5. Research – Growing the Capacity • Currently 45 Engineering Professors with research links to sustainability • TISED Endowed Research Chair • Faculty Scholar Award • Fellowships for Doctoral and Masters students • Research Workshops program • Scholar-in-Residence program. Interested in working with McGill? Reach Industry Liaison Manager, Katya Marc:katya.i.marc@mcgill.ca514-398-3355

  6. Education • Master’s degree in Sustainable Engineering • new courses being launched • program launch in 2016 • Incorporate sustainability into the engineering undergraduate curriculum • Summer Undergraduate Research in Engineering projects on sustainability (SURE) • Support design projects and student participation in competitions

  7. TISED 2013 Outreach activities • Towards a 100% Clean-Energy-Quebec • Joint event with Institut de l'énergie Trottier • 4 international speakers (EPFL, McGill, UQAC, Polytechnique) • 400+ students, academics, government, industry attended • Videos and presentations available on TISED website • Educational recognition event for student projects on energy • Recognition for Fondation 3E funding of energy literacy projects, e.g. “Evaluation of energy reduction in transportation: long-term impact of Eco-driving in Québec”, “Energy Use and the Urban Environment: A Review of Models and Indicators (Quartier de l'innovation)” Policy publication • Policy brief to Commission sur les enjeuxénergétiques du Québec • Joint brief submitted with Institut de l'énergie Trottier • recommend clear actions for government
