Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA) • Signed into law in August of 1990 • Amendment Year: 1994 • Oil Pollution Act is a national law • OPA improved the nation’s ability to prevent and respond to oil spills by establishing provisions • It wanted to establish limitations on liability for damages that resulted from oil pollution
Oil Pollution Act (Cont.) • OPA increased penalties for regulatory noncompliance, and wanted State authority to establish law governing oil spill prevention policies • OPA created the National Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund, which provides up to one billion dollars per oil spill • OPA is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency
