  2. Chloroplasts • Chloroplasts are found in the cells of plants. • Chloroplasts absorb light energy and make food through photosynthesis.

  3. Photosynthesis • Reactants: water and carbon dioxide • Products: glucose and oxygen 6CO2 + 6H2O + light  C6H12O6 + 6O2

  4. Chlorophyll • Chloroplasts contain a pigment called chlorophyll. • A pigment is a light-absorbing molecule. • Chlorophyll reflects green light and absorbs all other colors of light.

  5. Thylakoids • Chloroplasts contain sack-like photosynthetic membranes called thylakoids. • Thylakoids are arranged in stacks called grana. • The light-dependent reactions occur in the thylakoids.

  6. Stroma • The area outside the thylakoids is called the stroma. • The light-independent reactions occur in the stroma.
