  1. EVOLUTION OF THE PLATYPUS BY: Emii Taylor Period 2

  2. BACKGROUND • The misconception: evolution is still occurring. • I found evidence that evolution it is still occurring by researching the platypus

  3. EVIDENCE #1maleplatypuses are venomous • The platypus is  venomous. Male platypus has venom spurs on each leg to compete for a mate or territory during the breeding season. • some snakes and lizards produce venom containing similar molecules • This led to the trace of evolution through the platypus and reptile venom.

  4. EVIDENCE #2platypus genome has retile, mammal and bird genes • Scientist found odor receptors of the bill of platypus, similar to rodents and dogs. • extinct reptiles passed on much of their DNA to the platypus over the course of evolution. • Platypuses lay eggs because of birds and reptile genes

  5. EVIDENCE #3how the platypus adapts to its environment • Adapted to the river or lakes by doing or having: • Webbed feet • Slick streamline body • Slick and thick waterproof fur • Closes eyes, ears, nostrils while underwater • Powerful claws for burrowing (burrowing is for shelter and protection)

  6. CONCLUSION • The platypus is still evolving today. I showed three pieces of evidence of evolution in the platypus. • Evolution is still occurring today even when we don’t know it.

  8. Interesting facts • The wooly furred coat actually has three different layers. • first layer keeps the animal warm, by trapping air • second layer provides an insulating coat for the animal • third layer of long flat hairs to detect objects close by.
