Mesoamerica • Terraced farming and irrigation played key roles in success of agricultural production • Specifically the Teotihuacan civilization, the use of chinampas contributed to constant food supply, since agriculture could be produced all year round. • Long distance trade was main component of economy. • Specialized goods (pottery and obsidian tools in the Teotihuacan civilization) were traded throughout markets and tribute relationships

  3. Andean • Power to dictate the carrying out of trade was in the hands of the government (the Andean government included hereditary king, religious elite, aristocracy) • Vertical exchange system was an element established in society • Three main ecological zones were present: 1. Mountainous Zone 2. Arid Zone 3. Tropical Zone A number of tactics were put into effect in order to sustain life in all three zones

  4. Comparison Trade held a very significant role in both the Mesoamerican and Andean societies. But, when compared side by side, the aspects of trade in each were different.
