  1. 2.5 – Correlation & Line of Best Fit

  2. Vocabulary • Scatter Plot – a graph that is used to determine whether there is a relationship between paired data. • Positive Correlation – if y tends to increase as x increases • Negative Correlation – if y tends to decrease as x increases • No Correlation – if there is no linear pattern

  3. Positive correlation

  4. Negative correlation

  5. No correlation

  6. Constructing a scatter plot • Draw the appropriate • Label your axis • Title your graph • Plot your points • Sketch a line of best fit (if asked for)

  7. Construct a scatter plot of the data below. Describe the correlation. Number Enrolled Years since 1989

  8. Line of best fit • When the data shows positive or negative correlation, a line can be drawn and estimated to help describe the data and be used to predict future event.

  9. Constructing A line of best fit • Make sure the line you draw is in the middle of the data • There should be an even amount of data points above and below the line

  10. Approximating the line of best fit • Go to STAT and EDIT • Clear out data currently in there • Enter in your input data in L1 and your output data in L2 • 2ND QUIT (mode button) • Go back to STAT and over to CALC • Since we are discussing linear models – go to LINREG (linear regression) • Press ENTER to display your answer

  11. APPROXIMATE A LINE OF BEST FIT FOR THE data. Predict how many people will be enrolled in 2010? Number Enrolled Years since 1989

  12. Use the table below which give the average life expectancy (in years) of a person based on various years of birth.a) Construct a scatter plot of the data.b) Approximate the best-fitting line for the data.c) Predict the life expectancy for someone born in 2010.
